The Fauna

Socotra is known for its incredible biodiversity. The island’s isolated location and harsh climate have allowed for the evolution of a variety of endemic and rare species of animals, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. One of the most iconic animals on Socotra is the Socotra cormorant, a seabird with striking blue eyes and a distinctive hooked bill. These birds can be found nesting in large colonies along the island’s rugged coastline, and are known for their striking plumage and graceful diving abilities. Another notable bird found on Socotra is the Socotra grosbeak, a small but colorful bird with bright yellow feathers and a distinctive beak. This species is critically endangered and is only found on the island, making it a must-see for bird enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.

Socotra is also home to the Arabian leopard, a rare and elusive big cat that is found primarily in the island’s mountainous regions. The Arabian leopard is one of the most endangered big cats in the world, with only a few hundred remaining in the wild. Visitors to Socotra may be lucky enough to spot one of these majestic animals during their trip. In addition to these unique animals, Socotra is home to a number of other endemic and rare species, including the Socotra golden-winged grosbeak, the Socotra sunbird, and the Socotra spiny-tailed lizard.

These animals are all critical to the island’s delicate ecosystem and are protected by local conservation efforts. Socotra’s fauna is a testament to the island’s unique and isolated environment, with many rare and endemic species found nowhere else on earth. The Socotra cormorant, Socotra grosbeak, Arabian leopard, and other animals are just a few examples of the incredible diversity and beauty of the island’s fauna.
